Maha Shivratri is to be celebrated on - 17th Feb 2015.

Story to be read on Maha Shivratri 2015

Once upon a time King Chitrabhanu of the Ikshvaku dynasty, who ruled over the whole of Jambudvipa (India), was observing a fast with his wife, it being the day of Maha Shivaratri. The sage Ashtavakra came on a visit to the court of the king.

The sage asked the king the purpose of his observing the fast. King Chitrabhanu explained that he had a gift of remembering the incidents of his past birth, and in his previous life he had been a hunter in Varanasi and his name was Suswara. His only livelihood was to kill and sell birds and animals. The day before the new moon, while roaming through forests in search of animals, he saw a deer, but before his arrow flew he noticed the deer's family and their sadness at its impending death. So he let it live. He had still not caught anything when night fell, so he climbed a tree for shelter. It happened to be a Bael tree. His canteen leaked water, so he was both hungry and thirsty. These two torments kept him awake throughout the night, thinking of his poor wife and children who were starving and anxiously awaiting his return. To pass the time, he engaged himself in plucking the Bael leaves and dropping them down onto the ground.

The next day he returned home and bought some food for himself and his family. The moment he was about to break his fast a stranger came to him, begging for food. He served the food first to stranger and only ate afterward.

At the time of his death, he saw two messengers of Lord Shiva, sent to conduct his soul to the abode of Shiva. He learnt then for the first time of the great merit he had earned by unconscious worship of Shiva during the night of Maha Shivaratri. The messengers told him that there had been a Lingam (a symbol for the worship of Shiva) at the bottom of the tree. The leaves he dropped from the Bael tree had fallen into the shape of a Lingam, in imitation of Shiva's ritual worship. The water from his leaky canteen had washed the Lingam (also a ritual action), and he had fasted all day and all night. Thus, he unconsciously had worshiped Lord Shiva. At the conclusion of the tale the King said that he had lived in the abode of the Shiva and enjoyed divine bliss for a long time before being reborn as Chitrabhanu. This story is narrated in the Garuda Purana.[6]

'Shivaratri' means 'night of Shiva'. The important components of this religious festival are rigid fasting for twenty four hours and sleepless vigil during the night. Every true devotee of Lord Shiva spends the night of Shivaratri in deep meditation, keeping vigil and observing the fast.

The worship of Lord Shiva consists in offering flowers, Bilva leaves and other gifts on the Lingam, which is a symbol of Lord Shiva, and bathing it with milk, curd, ghee, honey, sugar, coconut water, butter, and rose-water.

When creation had been completed, Shiva and Parvati had been living on the top of Kailas. Parvati asked: “O venerable God, which of the many rituals observed in Thy honour doth please Thee most?” Lord Shiva replied: “The thirteenth night of the new moon, Krishna Paksha, in the month of Magha(February–March) is known as Maha Shivaratri, My most favourable Tithi. My devotees give Me greater happiness by mere fasting than by ceremonial baths, and offerings of flowers, sweets, and incense.

"Just hear, My Beloved, of an episode which will give you an idea of the glory and power of this ritual," said Lord Shiva to Parvati.

“Once upon a time, there lived in the town of Varanasi a hunter. He was returning from the forest one evening with the game birds he had killed. He felt tired and sat at the foot of a tree to take some rest. He was soon overpowered by sleep. When he awoke, it was the thick darkness of night. It was the night of Maha Shivaratri but he didn't know it. He climbed up the tree, tied his bundle of dead birds to a branch and sat up waiting for the dawn. The tree happened to be My favorite, the Bilva tree.

“There was a Lingam under that tree. He had plucked a few leaves and then dropped them down, accidentally forming the shape of a Lingam. The night-dew trickled down from his body. I was highly pleased with involuntary little gifts of the hunter. The day dawned and the hunter returned home.

“In time, the hunter fell ill and gave up his last breath. The messengers of Yama(Lord of Death) arrived at his bedside to carry his soul to Yamlok(abode of Yama). My messengers also went to the spot to take him to My abode. There was a vicious fight between Yama’s messengers and My messengers. The former were easily defeated. They reported the matter to Yama, Lord of Death. He arrived in person at the portals of My abode. Nandi gave him an idea of the sanctity of Maha Shivaratri and the love which I had for that hunter. Yama surrendered the hunter to Me and returned to his abode. Thereafter, Yama has pledged not to touch my devotees without my consent.

“The hunter was able to enter My abode and ward off death by simple fasting and the offering of a few Bilva leaves, even accidentally, because it was the night of Maha Shivaratri. Such is the solemnity and sacredness associated with that night.”

Parvati was deeply impressed by the speech of Lord Shiva on the sanctity and glory of Maha Shivaratri. She repeated it to Her friends, who in their turn passed it on to the ruling princes on earth. Thus, the sanctity of Maha Shivaratri was broadcast all over the world.

Coconut Day festival or Narali Purnima takes place in Maharasthra & Kerala. It is celebrated mostly by the fishing community who offer their prayers for their safety to the sun-god Varuna.
On the full moon day of Sravan is celebrated the Narli Purnima to appease the fury of the Sea-god Narli Purnima. It also marks the end of monsoon, and is primarily observed by sailors, fishermen and others living in the coastal areas of South India. They offer coconut to the sea on this occasion. If the sea happens to be far away, people go to some nearby tank, pool, river or some other source of water and offer coconut.A coconut has three eyes. It is said to represent Lord Shiva, the three eyed God. Coconut is considered to be an auspicious offering to Gods. A coconut is broken in front of the deities before taking up a new venture to seek blessings and on successful comlition for thanks giving. Coconut is important for all religious occasions. Thus coconut is considered to be an ideal offering to the Sea God as well.
Fishermen and fishing community in Maharashtra celebrates the Nariyal Purnima or the Coconut Festival in a jubilant manner. On the day of Narial Festival, fishermen of Maharashtra worship Samudra (Sea God) and Varuna Deva (Rain God). Coconuts are offered to the Sea God. After the Puja, fishing is started. They perform the pooja to the Sea God to protect them from natural calamities. Narali Poornima marks the monsoon season and represents the beginning of new fishing period.
Pieces of coconut and coconut are distributed as 'prasad'. Coconut rice is the main dish on this day.

Varalakshmi Vrat , Simha Sankranti ,vrat katha Hindi English Download.

Varalakshmi Vratham is a Ritual to worship the goddess Lakshmi. Varalakshmi Pooja is celebrated on the friday, before the full moon day (purnima) in the traditional month of Sravan (Sravanam/Aadi/ Sawan). This year Varalakshmi

Vratham falls on 28th August 2015 (Friday)

Varalakshmi means the boon granting goddess. Worshipping Goddess Lakshmi on Varalakshmi Vratham is equivalent to worshipping Ashtalaksmi – the eight goddesses known as Sri (Wealth), Bhu (Earth), Sarasvati (learning), Priti (love), Kirti (Fame), Santi (Peace), Tushti (Pleasure) and Pushti (Strength).

varalakshmi vratham story

Once great sage Suuta explains Saunaka and other sages a Vratam(ritual) which when performed by ladies would fetch them all the prosperity and other wishes that a lady wants. He tells them that this was actually narrated by Lord Shiva to goddess Parvati.
Once in Kailasam (the abode of Lord Shiva ) Parvati approaches Lord Shiva and asks him “ what is the vrat that has to be performed by ladies so that they will get all the benefits that they long for  like children, grandchildren, long life to husbands etc. Lord Shiva tells that there is one such Vratam and it is the “VaraLakshmi Vratam” . The meaning being Vara is a boon and VaraLakshmi the goddess who will be granting the boon.
Lord Shiva  tells Parvati that this pooja should be performed on a Friday that comes just before the Full moon day of Sravana Month. The Friday before the Sravana Poornima.
Parvati then asks the procedure and the the history of the benefits of the  vrat.
Shiva starts to narrate the story of the benefits.
Once there was a city by name Kundi in the country of Magadha . The town was almost built with gold, even the walls, the fencing walls, doors, houses everything was made of gold. In that town lived a lady by the name of Charumati, who was a perfect example for a Indian women who worship their husbands, serve the parent in laws and do the duty of a wife, daughter in law and mother to perfection. Goddess Lakshmi was very much impressed with Charumati. Goddess Lakshmi  appeared to Charumati in her dream and told that she was pleased with the way she was doing her duties and told her to worship her on a Friday that comes just before the full moon day of the Sravana Month and she would grant her any wish that she would want.
In the dream itself Charumati worshipped Goddess Lakshmi with the following sloka
Namsathe sarvalokanam jananya punya murthaye
Saranye tri jaga dwandye Vishnu vakshasthalaye
And many others.
Charumati prayed to the goddess saying “  oh the one who is the mother of all ! the one who gets your blessings are the lucky ones who will be educated, rich. It is because of the good deeds that I have done in my previous birth that you appeared before me and blessed me.
She immediately got up from the sleep and sees around  and doesn’t find the goddess and so is convinced that it was a dream. She explains the dream to her husband and in laws, who encourage her to perform the vrat . Charumati tells the same experience to all the ladies neighbouring her house. Everyone is eagerly waiting for Sravana Month.
Finally the Firday before the Full moon of the sravana month arrives and the all the ladies start to prepare for the pooja. They get up early in the morning, take a head bath, wear silk sarees. They clean up with the place with cowdung called Gomayam. They put up a altar called as Mandap and on that  a stool called Asanam (chair).  On that Asan they pour the rice and on the rice setup the Kalash.
Kalash is nothing but a vessel that is normally used to hold water, but a smaller size vessel on top of which a coconut in the inverted position is kept. The top the coconut is wrapped up with a  piece of cloth. Then they invite (Avahana) goddess Lakshmi to come with all the Mantras.
All the ladies performed the pooja to the goddess, along with performing the 16 offers (Shodaso upachara ).
After completing the pooja they tied thread with nine knots to their right hand wrist and started doing Pradakshina ( rotating around the idol chanting the name of the Goddess Lakshmi).
Once they started the pradakshini at the completion of the first round they heard the sound of anklets and see that they have been adorned with anklets.
By the end of second round they had bangles studded with nine types of diamonds and by the time they finished the third round they were fully adorned with jewelery on their bodies. They were happy that they were being blessed by the Goddess Lakshmi.
Even the houses have turned to gold and they were also blessed with all the form of vehicles and animals like cows, horses, and elephants.
To take the rest of ladies to their home, their chariots and other vehicles reached Charumatis home. All the ladies along with Charumati seeked the blessings of the Brahmins who helped them in performing the pooja , gave them the fees(Dakshina) along with Tamboolam (little quantity of betle nut, betlenut leaves and a fruit). They also gave the Brahmin 12 Kudumus(a recipe prepared on this day). Brahmins blessed them and all the ladies left to their houses happily.
They kept on discussing the wealth that Charumati and they acquired and how lucky they were to be called by Charumati. They all praised her for not keeping the Vrat to herself but telling to all the others so that every one can prosper.
From that day onwards, it had become a part of their yearly ritual to perform this Vrat and lived happily with their sons and grandsons ever after.
Lord Shiva concludes the story by telling that “ Goddess Parvati, by doing this Vrat and by spreading this Vrat and helping others also to do it will bring prosperity not only to family but also to the kid and kin. By hearing or reading this story , one is blessed with prosperity”
Suutha ends the story stating that “ I hope you all have heard how Charumati selfless helped others and wished for their prosperity, it is this virtue that is liked by the Goddess and the one with this virtue will always be dearer to the Goddess. The Goddess would provide every thing that is needed by her devotees with this virtue.”

Jagannath (or Jagannatha) meaning "Lord of the Universe", is a deity worshipped primarily by Hindu people, mainly in the Indian states of Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, Assam, Manipur and Tripura and by Hindus in Bangladesh. Jagannath is considered a form of Vishnu or his avatar Krishna by the Hindus. Jagannath is worshipped as part of a triad on the "Ratnavedi" (jewelled platform) along with his brother Balabhadra and sister Subhadra by his devotees.
The icon of Jagannath is a carved and decorated wooden stump with large round eyes and with stumps as hands, with the conspicuous absence of any legs. The worship procedures, practices, sacraments and rituals of Jagannath do not conform with those of classical Hinduism. The principal image of the deity is at the temple city of Puri in Odisha. It is made of wood, which is an exception to common Hindu iconographic deities of metal or stone. The origin and evolution of Jagannath worship, as well as iconography, is unclear and has been subject to intense academic debate.
Jagannath lacks a clear vedic reference and is also not a member of the traditional Dashavatara concept or the classical Hindu pantheon, though in certain Oriya literary creations, Jagannath has been treated as the Ninth avatar, by substituting Buddha.
Jagannath considered as a form of the Hindu God Vishnu, is non-sectarian and has not been associated with any particular denomination of Hinduism in entirety, though there are several common aspects with Vaishnavism, Saivism, Shaktism, Smartism, as well as with Buddhism and Jainism.
The oldest and most famous Jagannath deity is established in Puri. The temple of Jagannath in Puri is regarded as one of the Char Dham (sacred Hindu pilgrimage places) in India.
The most famous festival related to Jagannath is the Ratha yatra, where Jagannath, along with the other two associated deities, comes out of the Garbhagriha of the chief temple (Bada Deula). They are transported to the Gundicha Temple (located at a distance of nearly 3 kilometres (1.9 mi)), in three massive wooden chariots drawn by devotees. Coinciding with the Rath Yatra festival at Puri, similar processions are organized at several places in the world where Jagannath temples have been built.
